What is a Limner? A Limner was an illuminator of manuscripts during the 1700s in Europe. The world Limner means, "To illuminate".
In 18th century Colonial America the term Limner used to describe early artists who were commissioned for varying styles of work. These Limners had little to no formal training and were often hired by families of moderate wealth to paint portraits, or small shops for odd jobs such as sign painting. Limner portraits were one of the first windows to American life in a way considered as early folk art of the colonies. These portraits expressed a lack of skill in perspective, shade, and composition, and often looked flat in nature compared to their European counterparts. Some Limners would travel town to town in search for commissions working on varying mediums such as clocks, glass, and wood. Eventually artists of Colonial America would flourish in terms of skill, and lead to the emergence of John Singleton Copley and Benjamin west. However the roots of the colonial Limner played a key role in portraying early American wealth.
Orange Ave. is a street that I lived on most of my adolescent to young adult life, and continues to be home base for my family. I've come to associate home with that name. The central valley is also one of the top producers of Oranges in the United states. I also have container based citrus including orange trees that were grafted from rootstock. Lets just say I am fond of citrus, especially the Orange.
I am not just an artist, but an artisan, craftsman and maker of things. I am modernizing the term Limner to associate it with artists who use their visual talents not only for canvas or walls, but in many other mediums, fabrications, and productions. This multi-talent way of production can form odd-jobs to offset living costs and allow the artists to continue their main source of creativity. And Oranges. Hence...The Orange Limner
